Anybody who knows me knows that if I could pick anywhere in the world to go on vacation, I would pick Walt Disney World every time. However, in 2016, I found one of my new favorite places in Orlando, and it is not a theme park!
This magical place is unlike anywhere I’ve ever been before. A place that tries their best to make sure that the families who come there have a week of laughter, smiles and good memories without having to worry about medical things like doctors appointments. It’s a place that has done wonderful things for those who have came through their gates since they opened in 1986.
Give Kids the World Village is a non-profit organization in Kissimmee, Florida. It is just a short drive from The Happiest Place on Earth, and it is completely wheelchair accessible!
In December of 2016, my grandparents and I, my little sister and best friend had the privilege of staying here and it was the best week I have ever had! Upon arrival, we were greeted by volunteers and attended an orientation where they told us all about their nonprofit, and the activities they held during the day, as well as nightly. After that, we were free to explore the village!
There are rides (yes, they are accessible!), there is a spa, a huge pool that is also accessible on certain ends, a movie theatre, plus so much more. It’s honestly it’s own little world and I wish we would’ve spent more time here. Oh, and there’s a talking tree named Old Elmer. He was one of my favorite things about the village.
We had ice cream for breakfast, played mini golf with dinosaurs, and met incredible individuals whose stories still stick with me today, even though 4 years have passed since my wish trip. Most importantly, throughout our week long stay, I got to make memories with my best friend and those I love most without worrying about doctor’s appointments or anything else that comes with my medical journey, and for that, I am forever grateful.
I still think back on the memories we made at The Village and smile because, we got to escape reality for awhile without stress and worry. The volunteers we encountered and interacted with were incredible and so kind. It is because of them that Give Kids the World continues to be a place of happiness for families from all over.
Every time my grandmother and I are in Orlando, we always go back as alumni and reminisce about all the fun we had at the holiday events and nightly parties, and how much we laughed at the last hole of mini golf.
I hope to visit again soon!
